^ Subject: mail accidents

Dear Forum,

several times you have been bothered by messages coming to the GAP Forum
that didn't belong there. They were essentially caused in two ways:

1) unsubscribe messages were sent to the Forum instead of being sent
to Miles, the software that maintains the GAP Forum,

2) somebody wanting to write to an author of a letter to the GAP Forum
used the reply function of his/her mailer. However, such a letter then
went to the Forum.

In order to protect you from such unwanted mail, we have decided to
install a safeguard.

1) Any mail sent to the Forum beginning with "subscribe" or "unsubscribe"
will be rejected. The author of such a mail will automatically get a
letter in which he/she is told to send this message to

Miles@Math.RWTH-Aachen.DE

2) The first line of any reply to the Forum must contain at least one of the
words "GAP" or "forum" (case insensitive). So for instance you could
start by saying "Dear GAP Forum", "Dear Forum Members" or the like.
If you send a message to the GAP Forum using the reply function without
using one of the keywords in the first line, the message will be rejected
and a you will get a warning repeating the advice given here.

If you don't want to use the above keywords in answering to the GAP
Forum, instead of using the reply function send your mail to

GAP-Forum@Math.RWTH-Aachen.DE.

If you want to write to the author of a Forum message, please use the
address given in the "From:" field of the message.

It is clear that this safeguard cannot catch all unwanted replies,
but it should catch at least the obvious ones.

with kind regards
Frank Celler and Joachim Neubueser
