These errors stem from former versions of GAP when this notation was
permitted. When the new concept of strings as lists of characters was
introduced in version 3.3, the notation had to be changed to \<
&c. to avoid misinterpretations by the parser.
Thanks for pointing out this error. We will fix the manual in the next
version.
