^ Subject: GAP4b4 on Windows machines

Dear Gap-Forum,

We have obtained several reports from people who had problems using the
online help from the Windows version of GAP.

When trying out the online help on a Windows95 PC I have access to, however
I have been unable to reproduce the error (though I get a warning about
`ioctl' which is harmless).

(What I did was to go in the DOS shell to the gap4b4 root directory and to
start GAP with the command

bin\gapw95

)

It is possible that there are variations in the Windows setup that will
(or won't) permit reading the help files. But as we don't have any serious
Windows knowledge in our development team I fear it will take us some time
to sort this problem out.

If there is a person with Windows knowledge among the readers of this forum
who would be able to help (or probably already has found a way around this
problem), this would be appreciated very much.

Similarly (as the installation document states) we have not yet been able
to enable command-line editing under Windows. If anyone has relevant
expertise (especially of Cygnus Software's GNUWIN32 cross-compiler and
libraries) we would welcome help and be happy to assist them in sorting
this out.

Best regards,

Alexander Hulpke
