Dear Forum members,

a new version of my GAP port for the Macintosh is now available at the GAP
ftp site in St. Andrews. Note that this is *not* a new version of GAP
itself, but a new version of the GAP user interface for the Mac.

This update consists of three files, 'gap68k.sea.bin' and 'gapPPC.sea.bin'
contain the updated GAP application for 68K Macs and Power Macintoshes,
respectively. The source files (for CodeWarrior Pro 2) are contained in the
archive 'macsrc344.sea.bin'. These files are available at
<ftp://ftp-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/pub/gap/gap-3.4.4/bin/mac/>), and will
shortly be available at the usual GAP mirror sites
(ftp://ftp.math.rwth-aachen.de/pub,
ftp://ftp.ccs.neu.edu/pub/mirrors/ftp-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/pub/gap,
ftp://pell.anu.edu.au/pub/algebra).

If you had GAP 3.4.4 installed on your Mac before, simply download the new
GAP application, and replace the old GAP application with it. Otherwise,
you will have to download the whole GAP distribution, for details see the
README.MAC file in the same ftp directory as the updated GAP application or
the file 'Readme.GAP.mac.html' which comes with the GAP applications and is
also available online at
<http://wwwmaths.anu.edu.au/~hofling/Readme.GAP.mac.html> .

The major changes with respect to version 2.0 of the Mac port include:

* if GAP reads a file which is open in an editor window, it reads
the edited version of the file, rather than the last saved version
* GAP is now more cooperative when running in the background
* The preferences dialog is now in the Edit menu
* garbage collection messages can now be switched on/off in Windows
menu
* automatic scrolling of log window can now be disabled for faster
printout
* Runtime() now measures CPU time used by GAP, not overall time
