I've dowloaded the two .zoo files (bin3r4p1.zoo and gap3r4p1.zoo)
and I'd like to put them on diskettes; but gap3r4p1.zoo is far
too big, of course. Where would I find a set of .zoo files that
will fit on HD PC-diskettes (1.4 Mbyte)?

for Patchlevel 0 there is shell script in
"ftp.math.rwth-aachen.de:/tmp/PACKIT", it should be easy to change it
to Patchlevel 1.

Also it seems that some of the filenames are too long for my DOS
and OS/2 to handle, so I probably lose some of the files when I
expand the file; is it possible to give those files shorter
names?

The longer file names are in some share library packages which don't
run under DOS (1), so you can just ignore these files,

(1) in order to avoid misunderstandings:

share libaries written completely in GAP work well under any operating
system (smash, grape without nauty and weyl), the filenames in these
packages are DOS conform.

The packages which use standalone C programs might or might not work
under DOS but we haven't test this. If you find out that such a share
library works under DOS or OS/2, it is good idea to tell the *author*
which changes are necessary, the author of each package is given in
chapter "Share Libraries". If no changes are necessary, send a notice
to "gap-trouble" and we will put a short note into the manual that
this package was test (and runs) under DOS or OS/2.

XGAP requires X-Windows, however the libary part, for example the
lattice drawing program, will work as soon as someone writes a DOS
kernel.
