I installed GAP on an 80386 with the Linux operating system (version 1.0).
My machine has 8 MB of RAM, about 1 of which is taken up with Linux stuff.
I find I can run GAP with 4.75 MB of RAM but no more (I get error messages
when I try to run it with more).

There seems to be something wrong with the momory management.
For example, if I start up gap and execute the command

6suz:=CharTable("6.suz");

GAP says it runs out of memory and I get thrown back into the operating
system.

I don't think I should be having this problem. If anyone has
installed GAP on Linux and knows how to deal with this, please let me
know.

For the record, I have about 16 MB of swap space and lots of
room in my main partition.

If necessary, I can alsopost on a linux group, but I think the
GAP group is the [place to start.
