^ Subject: Mail formats for the GAP Forum

Dear GAP Forum,

Many modern mail programs support "enhanced" formats for mail messages,
including attached documents, mail formatted with different fonts and colours,
accented characters and so forth.

This message is a request NOT to use such features in messages to the Forum.
There are three reasons for this. Firstly, many Forum recipients use older
programs to read their email, which cannot process such messages and
attachments. Secondly, some formats can dramatically increase the size of
messages, which increases the load on the server which handles the Forum
(which is also our FTP server, file server and CVS server). Thirdly, the
software which handles the forum is not aware of the special formats of these
messages, and may end up delivering them in a form where they cannot be read
at all.

Please try and restrict your Forum messages to traditional 72-column ASCII
text only.

Thanks
Steve Linton
