Try Ken Brown's article "Groups of virtually finite dimension"
in "Homological Group Theory" (LMS Lect Notes 36, ed. CTC Wall).
In particular all the properties that I mentioned follow from
formulae (6.1) and (6.3) there (together with \chi({1}) = 1).
